EAC panel discussion

The University of Maryland Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement (CDCE) and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) hosted the 2024 Elections Summit at the University on January 30, 2024. Officials from around the country, lawmakers, and campus community experts came together to discuss challenges the United States faces in serving voters, securing elections, and other areas in advance of the 2024 elections.

University of Maryland President Pines opened the event, noting that he sees "universities like ours, the University of Maryland, and higher education in general as one of your partners... Nonpartisan and bipartisan voting efforts are as important as getting students to show up to class and study. We are charged with educating and developing leaders and citizens, and it’s a responsibility that I really take very seriously."

CDCE Director Mike Hanmer and Chief Strategist Sam Novey spoke at the summit, leveraging their experiences and research to share strategies for reaching voters where they are, both by connecting with voters at community hubs like schools and senior centers and by making voting easier by using conveniently-located sports stadiums as polling places.
