Ernesto Calvo Receives Society for Political Methodology Excellence in Mentoring Award

The Department of Government and Politics congratulates Ernesto Calvo, the Horace E. and Wilma V. Harrison Distinguished Professor, on receiving the Society for Political Methodology's Excellence in Mentoring Award.

Presented annually by the Society for Political Methodology, the award recognizes members of the Society who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.

At the University of Maryland, Calvo serves as director of the Interdisciplinary Lab for Computational Social Science (iLCSS), where faculty and students work together on research that combines computational methods, data science, and the social sciences to better understand politics and society.

Calvo also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative politics, Latin American politics, political economy, political parties, and research methods. His writing-intensive courses encourage students to engage critically with complex political questions while developing original, evidence-based arguments.

An internationally recognized scholar, Calvo's research focuses on comparative political institutions, political representation, elections, social media, and social networks. He has authored multiple books and more than 70 scholarly publications.
