GVPT Alumnae Lead with Purpose in Prince George’s County
The Department of Government and Politics is proud to highlight two alumnae making an impact in local government. Wala Blegay is a 2006 GVPT alumna, and Wanika Fisher is a 2010 GVPT alumna, and both currently serve on the Prince George’s County Council, helping represent one of Maryland’s most diverse and dynamic communities.
In a recent Diamondback feature, Blegay and Fisher — both daughters of African immigrants — shared how their heritage shapes their work and their commitment to inclusion. Blegay, who represents District 6, draws from her Liberian and Nigerian roots to engage African community leaders and promote broader civic participation. Fisher, who represents District 2, credits her family’s history of activism during apartheid and her experiences at UMD with inspiring her path in public service.
Their stories, alongside fellow council member Krystal Oriadha, reflect the growing representation of immigrant voices in Prince George’s County government and highlight GVPT graduates' leadership in advancing equity and community engagement.
