GVPT Assistant Professor Alex Flores Co-Authors National Study on Ethnic Media and Disinformation
Department of Government & Politics (GVPT) Assistant Professor Alejandro (Alex) Flores, recently co-authored an important study with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ): “U.S. Ethnic and Indigenous Media Play Critical Role in Countering Disinformation.”
Conducted during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the study draws on interviews, text analysis of nearly 10,000 news and social media items, and a national survey to explore how ethnic and Indigenous newsrooms confront misinformation.
Key takeaways include:
- Ethnic media often detect and surface mistruths sooner thanks to community trust
- Domestic political forces, rather than foreign state actors, emerged as the primary source of disinformation in U.S. politics
- Closed messaging platforms create “information cocoons,” but community-based journalism plays a key role in breaking through those barriers
