GVPT Professor Jóhanna Birnir Publishes New Study in Nature on Indonesian Election Archive
Jóhanna Birnir, the Department of Government & Politics Lionel L. Bauman Endowed Professor of Politics, has co-authored a new study published in Nature. The study introduces the Indonesian Election Archive, a unique resource developed by a team of scholars and democratic NGO practitioners from Indonesia and the United States.
The archive responds to growing international demand for systematic, long-term election data. It offers detailed information across multiple levels of Indonesia’s elected offices, supporting research, transparency, and public engagement.
A key partner in this effort is Perludem (the Association for Elections and Democracy), working alongside the Indonesian Electoral Commission (KPU). Together, they provide voters with vital information before and after elections, strengthening accountability and democratic participation.
The archive is set to become an essential tool for researchers, policymakers, and advocates seeking to understand and strengthen democratic processes — not only in Indonesia, but globally. By systematically documenting and sharing election data, this initiative sets a new standard for transparency and accessibility in emerging democracies.
