GVPT Professor Shibley Telhami Highlights Americans Opposition to U.S. Takeover of Gaza
In the latest round of the University of Maryland’s Critical Issues Poll, Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, examined Americans public opinion on President Donald Trump’s proposals concerning Gaza. The poll revealed that fewer than 1 in 5 respondents—and fewer than 1 in 3 Republicans—supported the idea of a U.S. takeover of Gaza or the displacement of Palestinians to other countries. Conversely, Americans were deeply divided over the characterization of Israeli actions in Gaza. A majority of Democrats, including three-quarters of young Democrats (under 30), viewed Israeli actions as constituting at least "major war crimes," while a majority of Republicans saw them as justified actions under the right of self-defense.
