  • GVPT Professor Shibley Telhami Shares Analysis From Middle East Scholar Barometer: Campus Climate For Scholars Worsening
Shibley Telhami

Shibley Telhami, Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher, shares the latest findings from the Middle East Scholar Barometer, co-chaired with Marc Lynch. The newest survey reveals a troubling trend: U.S.-based Middle East scholars are increasingly self-censoring when discussing the Israeli-Palestinian issue—especially in light of recent U.S. policy developments.

Key findings include:

  • 61% of respondents report feeling a greater need to self-censor since President Trump took office.

  • The perception that expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza is “very likely” rose from 47% to 61% after the announcement of the administration’s new plan for Gaza.

  • Scholars describe a worsening working atmosphere on campuses nationwide.

"The chilling effect was evident in some of our poll results,” Telhami notes in the analysis.
