GVPT368L: What’s Leadership Got to Do with It?
The Department of Government and Politics (GVPT) is launching GVPT368L: “What’s Leadership Got to Do with It?” — a brand-new course co-taught by GVPT Chair Dr. Antoine Banks and U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks.
This course offers a unique, front-row perspective on leadership in practice. Students will:
- Learn directly from a sitting U.S. Senator
- Experience how leaders navigate ethics, public trust, and accountability
- Build the skills to lead in complex systems
- Network with high-level business leaders and public sector decision-makers
Ideal for students interested in policy, law, advocacy, or public service, the course examines the role of leadership in shaping government, policy, and civic life. Students will explore how leaders influence institutions, communities, and change — engaging with leadership models, public sector case studies, self-reflection, and collaborative projects.
Emphasis is placed on understanding the intersection of leadership, ethics, and public responsibility, with the goal of preparing students to navigate the challenges of serving the common good.
This is the kind of course people will look back on and say, “Only at Maryland – because Terps don’t just adapt, we lead.”
