Michael Hanmer Participates in Congressional Roundtable on Veteran Civic Engagement
GVPT Professor and CDCE Director Michael Hanmer, participated in a congressional roundtable hosted by the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Democrats at the Cannon House Office Building focused on strengthening civic engagement among veterans.
The June 24th roundtable brought together researchers, policymakers, and civic engagement leaders to discuss ways veterans can become more involved in nonpartisan civic engagement. The conversation centered on election education, confidence in the electoral process, and opportunities for veterans to support election administration.
Drawing on CDCE's research, Hanmer emphasized the importance of trusted local voices in strengthening confidence in elections. He also noted that universities, nonprofit organizations, and other trusted community institutions have an important role to play in communicating accurate information about election administration and supporting the work of local election officials.
Building on comments from a CDCE graduate student and Marine Corps veteran, Hanmer agreed that introducing election workforce opportunities during military transition programs could help connect veterans with meaningful civic service after leaving active duty.
