Sashi Juarez-Galindo Receives Two APSA Fellowships

Department of Government and Politics (GVPT) Ph.D student Sashi Juarez-Galindo received two fellowships from the American Political Science Association (APSA) this year in support of his research and development as a political scientist.

Sashi was named a 2026–27 APSA Diversity Fellowship Program recipient and a 2026 recipient of the APSA Fund for Latino Scholarship.

The APSA Diversity Fellowship Program supports students applying to or in the early stages of doctoral programs in political science. The Spring Diversity Fellowship is a one-time award for graduate students in the pre-dissertation stage of their doctoral programs.

Sashi’s research focuses on race and ethnic politics, Latino politics, intersectionality and public opinion in the United States. His work examines conflict within the Latino community and how intersecting identities and tolerance can shape the treatment and political participation of vulnerable groups.

The Fund for Latino Scholarship supports political science students and scholars who study and research Latina/o politics. Sashi’s award will support his ongoing research examining how Latino group consciousness and partisanship vary across cities and regions.

A Ph.D. student studying American politics and political methodology, Sashi earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Riverside, where he worked as a research assistant with the Minority Serving Institution Research Academy. At UMD, he has been involved with the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Computational Social Science and the Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement.

Sashi plans to continue working in academia after earning his Ph.D. and hopes to help other first-generation children of immigrants feel more comfortable pursuing higher education.
