Welcoming Sean Ashley to GVPT

The Department of Government and Politics is excited to announce that Dr. Sean Ashley will join GVPT as an Assistant Professor in August 2026.

Dr. Ashley is currently a President’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Maryland. His research focuses on conflict legacies, revolution, civil war, and authoritarian survival in the developing world, including civil wars between rebel groups and the state.

His work has received national recognition, including the Patricia Weitsman Award from the International Studies Association (2024), the Best Graduate Student Paper award (2023) from the African Politics Conference Group Section of the American Political Science Association, and was shortlisted for the Conflict Research Society Cedric Smith Prize (2023).

Dr. Ashley earned his Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University and previously held fellowships at Dartmouth College and the University of Notre Dame.
