Giancarlo is an Assistant Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and completed his undergraduate studies at the Universidad Católica de Chile.
He studies comparative political behavior and the political economy of development, with a regional focus on Latin America. Giancarlo is especially interested in topics related to crime, migration, ideology, and political attitudes. His work focuses on using and advancing methods for drawing causal inferences from both experimental and observational data.
His research has been published or is forthcoming in the Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Politics, Political Science Research and Methods, Public Opinion Quarterly, Political Behavior, Electoral Studies, and Latin American Politics and Society, among other outlets.
