Giancarlo is an Assistant Professor of Government & Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and completed his undergraduate studies at Universidad Católica de Chile. 

He studies comparative political behavior and the political economy of developing countries, with a regional focus on Latin America. He is especially interested in topics related to crime, migration, and political attitudes. His work focuses on using and advancing methods for drawing causal inferences from experimental and observational data.

His research has been published, or is forthcoming, in the Journal of PoliticsBritish Journal of Political ScienceComparative PoliticsPolitical Science Research and MethodsPublic Opinion QuarterlyPolitical Behavior, and Electoral Studies, among other outlets.
