GVPT Associate Professor David Karol was recently quoted in Newsweek discussing the political challenges Republicans face in balancing the U.S. budget. Karol highlighted the dilemma of balancing the budget without significant cuts to entitlement programs, which would be unpopular even among many Trump voters.

As Karol explained, "Voters in very red states have approved ballot measures expanding Medicaid coverage… So Republicans will ultimately have to choose between incompatible promises. Traditionally, the defense of entitlement programs has been a very strong issue for Democrats, so this is a perilous choice for the GOP."
