GVPT Professor Janelle Wong and her colleagues Nadia Brown and Fernando Tormos-Aponte recently published a new article in the American Political Science Review entitled "An Incomplete Recognition: An Analysis of Political Science Department Statements after the Murder of George Floyd."

Wong and her colleagues examined the public responses of political science departments to the brutal murder of George Floyd, asking two key questions:

  1. When describing the events around George Floyd’s murder during the Spring and Summer of 2020, how did departments characterize racism in the United States? In particular, did they characterize the murder as part of a larger system of structural racism or not?

  2. How, if at all, did the statements describe calls for action or actionable next steps within their departments?
