John McCauley is Professor of Government and Politics and the Director of the minor program on International Development and Conflict Management. The minor is a practical, pre-professional program that prepares students with both the theoretical frameworks and practical skills necessary to address critical global concerns. Students work on contemporary global challenges, developing issue briefs, policy memos, funding proposals, and more. They work with professional international development clients in Washington DC and beyond on real, ongoing initiatives. They learn from instructors with years of experience in the US government and international NGOs. For these reasons, the program serves as an exciting and appropriate complement to the theory-based courses in the GVPT department.
As director of the IDCM program, Dr. McCauley teaches the gateway course to the minor, and he brings his own applied research into the classroom. That includes a State Department-funded security initiative in Benin, a USAID-funded development project in Ghana, a project to reduce child labor in Cote d'Ivoire, a post-genocide healing project in Cambodia, and more.
