"Global Environmental Justice" is a two-part course exploring the different positions on justice in debates over climate change and biodiversity. The course examines concepts of justice, and what claims are made on behalf of communities and of nature itself. We will focus on climate change and biodiversity, and compare claims and policies in the US and Canada. We will meet for ten weeks on campus and one week in Montreal, Canada. Montreal is the home of the Biodiversity Convention and the Commission on Environmental Cooperation (between the US, Canada, and Mexico), both of which we will visit. We will also learn from local experts and activists, visit the Biodôme exhibit and museums, tour the city and enjoy the local cuisine. Montreal is an international city with a long history, and it has launched sustainability programs addressing environmental justice at the local level.
Students interested in this course must register by September 23 with Education Abroad at go.umd.edu/GVPT-Canada.
Professor Virginia Haufler, the course instructor, will hold a virtual information session on Thursday September 12 at 6:30pm.
She’ll answer your questions and provide insights on enhancing your education and exploring new cultures.
